2009 JEEP PATRIOT REVIEW
The 2009 Jeep Patriot is a similar vehicle to both the more automobile type of Dodge Caliber and the softly styled Jeep Compass. However, the Patriot has a chunkier, boxier, type of styling that looks both more functional and better.
A Limited model that has more standard features and a base Sport model are the two trim levels that are available for the 2009 Jeep Patriot SUV. Both four wheel drive models come with a standard four cylinder 2.4 liter engine that produce 165 foot pounds of torque and 172 hp.
A continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all wheel drive are available as an option while both models have a manual five speed transmission as standard equipment. The two wheel drive models come with a 2.o liter four cylinder engine that produces 158 hp.
The 2009 Jeep Patriot with many off road features although it is advertised as a rugged entry level Jeep. These features include an extra low off road gear that is offered on the models that are equipped with the CVT, and an all wheel drive system which are available with an electronic system the automatically modulates the brakes in order to maintain a low speed on steep incline that is called hill descent control. Another feature that is offered is the freedom drive II off road group package which includes a full size spare tire, front and rear tow hooks, and skid plates.
In 2009, the Jeep Patriot gets chrome accents with a smoother look and a slightly redesigned instrument panel. The new trim panels on the door have padded armrests and the new center console has a split lid for additional space for storage.
Under the hood there with the base 2 wheel drive there is a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that produces 158 hp that only provides performance the is barely adequate. The 2.4 liter four cylinder engine that is in the rest of the lineup produces 172 hp is not as peppy but is significantly more energetic. The Patriot can be bought with rather all or front wheel drive and a CVT automatic or a five speed manual transmission are offered with both of these engines and During hard acceleration with the CVT transmission both of these engines are very loud because the CVT transmission permits the engine to rev up close to the redline for a long period of time. The Patriot gets numerous small changes in 2009 such as revised suspension tuning that helps to provide a more comfortable, smoother ride, new floor insulation and a new engine compartment to reduce noise. But all of changes combined do little to silence the loudness that comes from the engine.
The 2009 Jeep Patriot easily fits into small spaces and parks because of its clearly defined corners, much the same as small sized compact car. Although the 2009 Patriot does have some body lean, when driving on a curvy road it doesn’t seem out of place and it has communicative steering. Its maneuverability and handling are its strength, surprisingly.
The 2009 Patriot has plenty of leg and headroom in the back for adults as a result of its boxy shape and although the front seats aren’t very supportive the overall seating is well laid out. As a result of the lack of shoulder room and the narrower body in the 2009 Patriot will only seat two adults comfortably. The 2009 Patriot's interior is sturdy looking and attractive, although basic. The 2009 Patriot looks like it will clean up well and has a very purposeful design, although there’s a lot of hard plastic.
One of the many innovative features of the 2009 Jeep Patriot is the rubberized cargo floor is which will easily clean up. The other standard features include speakers that fold out from the back hatch for entertaining purposes when tailgating and a flashlight that is rechargeable which can be stored in the rear cargo area.
The 2009 Jeep Patriot is available with a trail rated package that includes a tougher suspension that will clear the ground by an inch, hill descent control, heavy duty cooling, skid plates, and a low range transmission.
The 2009 Jeep Patriot comes with a very generous list of safety equipment that includes side curtain airbags, front side airbags, and electronic stability control with electronic roll mitigation that are all standard. The 2009 Patriot has done rather well in the federal government’s crash tests receiving five stars ratings for side impact and four and five star ratings for frontal protection.
The 2009 Jeep Sport model comes standard with a CD sound system, air conditioning, and windows that you have to wind manually. The 2009 Jeep Patriot Limited model includes a 15volt power outlet, cruise control, keyless entry, heated leather seats, and other extras.
If you read the many reviews for the 2009 Jeep Patriot you can conclude that the Patriot will continue to draw the attention of devoted Jeep enthusiasts as a result of it’s off road capabilities that are available. The 2009 Jeep Patriot more than meets the needs of a off road SUV and a daily driver because of its more than adequate cargo room. However, many of these reviews list the acceleration as poor.
Although the 2009 Jeep Patriot doesn’t handle like a Jeep, there can be no doubt that it is all Jeep as a result of its boxy bulky styling. You will love this newly improved Jeep if you liked the Jeep Cherokee.
There aren’t many SUVs that are based on a compact car that have off road capability that is credible. The reason for this is that there aren’t many people who want their daily drivers to have the design tradeoffs that are required to allow them to go off roading. However, the Jeep brand places much of its distinctiveness on its off road capability which leads the class and that is expected by the vehicles that the Jeep brand offers.
The exterior of the 2009 Jeep Patriot looks a lot like the older boxy, upright Jeep Cherokee. Underneath the 2009 Jeep Patriot uses the same platform as the Dodge caliber and the Jeep compass which would probably tremble at the first sign of off road use, and that’s just the way Jeep wants it. What sets the 2009 Jeep Patriot apart are the availability of protective skid plates, slightly higher ground clearance, a low range gear, and a steeper departure and approach angles.
There isn’t much space on the inside of the 2009 Jeep Patriot as a result of the high load floor and slim profile. Storage space is also limited as a result of the fact that the rear seats are somewhat tight. The rear seats increase the rear storage up to 54.t ft.3 because they fold down in a 60/40 split, but this is still considerable less than the other vehicles in this class.
The reviews say that driven moderately the 2009 Jeep Patriot corners capably, has limited body roll, and offers a quiet and comfortable ride. Although the optional CVT reduces much of the available power from the four cylinder 2.4 liter engine, in terms of power, it is still rated near the top of its class.
