2010 JEEP PATRIOT REVIEW
The 2010 Jeep Patriot Sport two wheel drive is you basic utility vehicle. It comes standard on all models with active head restraints and a four cylinder 2.0 liter engine and a five speed manual transmission which are all new this year. The 2010 Jeep Patriot is a great off road vehicle that can also be used as a daily driver. It is recognizable by its rear end that is square off, vertical grille slats, and round headlights. However, it is really just a Dodge caliber with a beefed up body. Never the less, it does have some loyal followers.
Both the 2010 Jeep Patriot and the Jeep Compass are based on the Dodge Caliber. However, the 2010 Jeep Patriot is the better vehicle as a result of the optional off road package that is available. This package give the Patriot some serious of road capability. The Freedom Drive II four wheel drive system is a much better system than the standard Freedom Drive I four wheel drive system that has an active full time system that is lockable. T Freedom Drive II four wheel drive system provides low range gearing, and elevated ride height. After all, the name Jeep is all about four wheel driving and this system gives the 2010 Jeep Patriot awesome off road capabilities.
The 2010 Jeep Patriot options include an LCD screen that is mounted in the dash, an MP3 system, Bluetooth, and a multimedia integration system that is hard drive based. However, the vehicle’s standard engine has poor acceleration and is noisy. It has poor handling on the highway and there is a lot of hard plastic in the interior. Also, the cargo space is limited with only 53 ft.3 available.
Other than its off road capabilities, there are many competitors of the 2010 Jeep Patriot that drive much better on the highway including the Toyota RAV4, the Subaru Forester, the Honda CR, the Ford Escape, and the Chevrolet Equinox. However, they can’t compare to this vehicle when it comes to off roading.
The 2010 Jeep Patriot is available in Limited and Sport models. The Sport model comes standard with an auxiliary audio jack, a CD/MP3 stereo with four speakers, a folding rear seatback with a 60/40 split, air conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, and 16” steel wheels. The Limited model comes standard with a six CD/MP changer, a trip computer, a steering wheel that is wrapped in leather and has audio controls, reclining rear seatbacks, a front passenger seat that folds flat, heated front seats, leather upholstery, cruise control, a 115 volt power outlet, keyless entry, chrome exterior accents, privacy glass, fog lamps, and 17” alloy wheels.
The options that are available on the Sport model include the six CD changer and 17” alloy wheels. The options that are available for both the Limited model includes digital music storage, a navigation system that is hard drive based, satellite radio, an iPod interface, and Bluetooth. The options that are available for both the Limited and the Sport models include an audio system that has flip down tailgate speakers and nine speakers, a sunroof, and roof rails.
In addition, the 2010 Jeep patriot models that come with four wheel drive are available with off rod package that includes an extra inch of ground clearance, hill descent control, and a low range gear ratio for the models that have CVT.
The 2010 Jeep Patriot comes standard with a four cylinder 2.4 liter engine that produces 165 foot pounds of torque and 172 hp. Also standard is the manual five speed transmission. Optional is the CVT. The 2010 Jeep Patriot is available in either one of two four wheel drive configurations or with two wheel drive. The four wheel drive configuration that comes standard is the light-duty Freedom Drive I. The optional configuration is the Freedom Drive II which is ready for off road use and comes with the CVT and a low range gear ratio. The 2010 Jeep Patriot is also available with the optional four cylinder 2.0 liter engine that produces 159 horsepower and either transmission.
The 2010 two wheel drive Jeep Patriot has a combined EPA fuel economy estimate of 25 mpg and ranges from 29 highway and 23 mpg city for the four wheel drive Patriot that is powered with the 2.0 liter and manual transmission. The four wheel drive patriot that has the off road package gets an estimated 20/22/21.
The 2010 Jeep Patriot comes standard with safety equipment that includes side curtain airbags, stability control with rollover mitigation, front head restraints that reduce whiplash, traction control, and antilock brakes. The optional safety equipment that is available on both the Limited and the Sport models include side airbags for the front seat. The Patriot earned five stars for passenger protection for front end impacts, and four stars for driver protection in government crash tests. However, with the optional side airbags the Patriot earned five stars for side impact testing for both rear and front passengers.
In front end and side impact crash tests, the 2020 Jeep Patriot was rated good. However, the side impact rating was only for the Patriot when it was equipped with the optional side impact airbags but without them it was only rated marginal.
The interior of the 2020 Jeep Patriot features a lot of hard plastic, simple controls and large gauges. The quality also left something to be desired. Although the steering wheel doesn’t have a telescoping function and the beltline is too high which deprives the driver of a good view of the road, the front seats are shaped nicely. However, the optional navigation system’s touch screen interface is a great addition and it provided many high tech features that aren’t available on many of its competitors.
The sound system in the 2010 Jeep Patriot features the unique speakers that are mounted on the lift gate and flop down such that the sound projects outward which is great for tailgate parties and camping trips. The cargo space is small, having only 53 ft.3 but the 2020 jeep Patriot has a cargo floor that is easy to clean and removable.
The engine in the 2010 Jeep Patriot 2.0 engine has very poor acceleration and performs poorly. The 2.4 liter engine produces 172 horsepower but it doesn’t accelerate much better. Much of the problem is with the CVT, which is very slow to respond to considerable throttle inputs. In addition, after the CVT has figured out that that you want some additional power; it causes the engine speed to redline, which sounds very scary.
None the less, the 2020 Jeep Patriot is an impressive off road vehicle when it is equipped with the low range gearing, skid plates, and 9.0” of ground clearance which come with the optional off road package. When it is equipped with the off road package it’s a very capable off road vehicle.
